About Stephen J. Fritz

Stephen J. Fritz grew up in Addison, New York, a small village in western New York State just a stone’s throw away from the Pennsylvania border, where everybody seemed to know everybody, local history was never far away, and the people and places had a way of staying with you long after you left. His affection for small-town life, its characters, and the stories that often go untold would eventually find their way into his fiction.

The idea for his debut novel, MIDDLETON: The Last Whistle, first took shape in 2013. But like a lot of good ideas, it had to wait its turn. Life, work, and family occupied the years that followed, although the story never completely went away. In 2026, after thirteen years of writing, revising, and refining the story through several drafts, Stephen brought Middleton into the form that would become his debut novel.

Middleton is fictional, but its roots run deep in the place where Stephen grew up. His novel explores the ties that bind people to their hometowns, the complicated relationship between history and memory, and the uncomfortable questions that arise when a familiar story turns out to be something other than what everyone believed. At its heart, it is a story about truth, family, and redemption.

Stephen's working life has been spent in structural and mechanical design, a career spanning over three decades. He currently works as a senior structural designer and project coordinator, leading design teams and contributing to building projects across the country. Writing a novel may seem like a departure from that world, but Stephen has always been interested in how things fit together—whether it's a building, a small town, or a story.

Stephen and his wife, Kristi, have called the mountainous region of the Carolinas home for decades, raising four sons and watching their family grow to include grandchildren. In South Carolina they've built a life firmly rooted in the region. But while the Carolinas are home, Stephen has never lost his affection for the hills, valleys, dairy farms and small towns of western New York State. One place shaped his beginnings; the other became the place where he built his life.

Stephen's debut novel, MIDDLETON: The Last Whistle, is scheduled for release in December 2026 by Brick & Iris Press. With a second novel already in development, he has no intention of making Middleton his only literary project.
